Creativity expert, professor, father and former day care provider Rustin Wolfe writes a weekly MinnMoms parenting advice column that uses creative punishments to put a positive spin on negative behavior.

Here's one of his creative solutions:

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Question: How do I get my toddler daughter to leave the really cool fountain at the mall?

Behavior: Won't go when it's time to go.

Problem: Have to go.

Solution: Set expectations from the outset and do not waiver.

Activity: I recall taking my wife horseback riding a few years ago. We were instructed to prevent our horses from grazing. Not being familiar with horses, she was a little hesitant. Her horse immediately sized her up, and she spent the entire ride battling it. Children sense our weakness, too. If you don't want your daughter to make an issue of the cool fountain, then let her know how long she has, and when that time is up, do not leave room for her to negotiate.
