Bad hair days become a fashion opportunity with Knot-a-Schmata headbands. The wide, circular design makes it easy to wear in several ways: bunched up, spread out or pulled down on your forehead, Axel Rose style.

St. Louis Park mom and graphic designer Kimberly Goldfarb created the line as an antidote to the ratty bandana she used to wear in spinning class. Available in colorful, retro-style prints, Goldfarb's headbands are anything but schmatas, the Yiddish term for garments you wouldn't want to be caught dead in.

Knot-a-Schmata headbands, $10 to $15, are now available at Patina stores and StormSister Spatique in St. Paul.
