The daughters of Minnesota Twins pitcher Glen Perkins (currently playing in the minors) are easy to spot at games. They're the ones in tutus. But not your ordinary pink tutus — Addie, 3 1/2, and Lyla, 20 months, wear red, white and blue tutus custom designed by their mom, Alisha Perkins.
Growing up in Lakeville, Perkins says she was a tomboy. Daughter Addie's girly-girl inclinations changed that, but when Addie started asking for dance clothes, there was only so much Perkins could take. "Everything was pastel, and that's just not me."
Perkins made her daughter a rainbow-colored tutu and requests for more came quickly. One year later, her line, Cakes & Beans (her daughters' nicknames) is sold in a dozen stores in the Twin Cities and beyond. Edgy tutus are the signature, but Perkins also designs shirts, barrettes, pacifier clips and other accessories.
Perkins will present her latest looks and take custom orders at Uber Baby at Shops at West End in St. Louis Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 10. For more info, visit Cakesandbeans.com.
