When your kids start cleaning out their classroom desks and bins as the school year draws to a close, ensure their original art and creative keepsakes arrive home in good condition with a nifty waterproof carryall made from two plastic soda bottles and cording.
Your young kids can make these at home and carry them to school over their shoulders along with their regular backpacks. The good news for any doting parents is the kids' special papers and masterpieces won't get stuck in backpack zippers or crumpled in side pockets when carefully tucked into this see-through torpedo-shaped cylinder.
HERE'S WHAT TO DO:
Wash and remove the labels from bottles. (Note: Leave lids screwed on.) Using scissors, cut off the base of each bottle. Trim any rough edges. On one bottle, make a 2-inch slit at the cut end, perpendicular to the bottom edge. Ease the open end of the bottle with the slit into the open end of the other bottle so the two bottles fit snugly together to form a torpedo-like container for rolled-up artwork.
Tie the shoelace or cording around the neck of the one bottle, and then tie the opposite end around the neck of the other bottle to make a strap. Sling over your child's shoulder and adjust to fit. Decorate the carryall with stickers.
To use, separate the bottles. Loosely roll up drawings and set inside. Put bottles
Extra idea: Empty gift-wrap, paper-towel or mailing tubes are also good totes for rolled-up art. Use them for sending art to grandparents, or label each tube with your child's name, year and grade for art storage at home.
