A dog can be a kid's best friend. Or it can be a danger.

This summer we've seen several disturbing cases of children injured or killed by dogs. There was the toddler who was bitten by a cocker spaniel in Como Park after his parents asked the owners if the boy could pet the dog. The toddler needed six stitches under his eye. Then there was the eight year old St. Paul boy who was bitten in the hip by a pit bull after two girls commanded the dog to "sic 'em." And, there was the sad case in Tulsa where a two-month old in a baby swing was mauled and killed by a young black Labrador while the infant's mother slept in another room.

Margaret Duxbury specializes in studying and changing behavior in dogs, especially aggression. After graduating from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, she worked as vet in private practice for fifteen years. She earned a specialty board certification in behavior and joined the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center in 2002 where she does research and works directly with dogs and their owners.

She answered reader questions about dogs, kids and how they mix.
