NEW YORK — Almost 100,000 Evenflo Majestic High Chairs are being recalled because plastic caps and metal screws on both sides of the chairs can fall off, causing the back of the seat to collapse, the government and the product maker said today.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Evenflo Co. Inc. announced the recall of about 95,000 high chairs sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchants nationwide, including Toys "R" Us, Babies "R" Us, Burlington Coat Factory and other stores.
Evenflo said it had received more than 1,000 reports of plastic caps and screws falling off of the high chairs and 140 reports of the seatbacks reclining or detaching.
The malfunctioning seats resulted in 47 reports of bumps and bruises, 2 reports of broken bones and at least 45 reports of other injuries, Evenflo said.
Children could also choke on the detached parts, the company and agency said. In at least seven cases, the company said caps and screws were found in children's hands or mouths, although no instances of choking were reported.
The chairs, which were priced at $80 to $100 and were made in China, were sold between January 2006 and May 2007, the announcement said.
Customers were advised to stop using the chairs and contact Evenflo, which is based in Miamisburg, Ohio, for a free repair kit.
The chairs were made before Jan. 23, 2007, and have the following model numbers, located on a white label on the seatback: 3001395A, 3001583, 3001633A, 3001669, 3001700A, 3001713, 3001713A, 3001730A, 3001732, 3001732A, 3001733, 3001742, 3001742A, and 3001756.
"Evenflo" is printed on the label and on the push button on the front of the tray.
The company said consumers can call 800-233-5921 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or log on to www.majestichighchair.com for more information.
